The epicenter was recorded about four kilometers from Alenquer, relatively close to the capital (just over 45 kilometers), withtwo earthquakes recordedin the same category on the Richter scale, 4.1.
Unusual seismic sequence

The area of the former Estremadura and much of the center of the country were shaken this early afternoon (12:14 and 12:16) by unusual seismic activity: the region of Alenquer was the epicenter of two significant tremors, both with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale, recorded within an interval of just 120 seconds.
And this was precisely the big news about this event: contrary to what is normal, there were no aftershocks, but rather a second earthquake (of the same intensity) 14 kilometers from Vila Franca de Xira, according to the IPMA – Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere, which, it should be noted, once again had problems with its website, which crashed after an event of this magnitude.
According to the same entity, the tremors occurred at an estimated depth of between 14 and 15 kilometers, and the energy released was clearly felt across a vast geographical area, causing thousands of citizens to be startled. Reports from our readers on our Instagram post confirm that the tremor was felt in:
- Caldas da Rainha
- Torres Vedras
- Óbidos
- Peniche
- Leiria
- Santarém
- Coimbra
- Viseu (more slightly)
The response of the authorities
It was relatively quick; although the IPMA website was inaccessible, the Civil Protection message arrived (in our case) at 12:32 p.m.
A few hours after both events, it is already known that there are no reports of casualties or structural damage.
However, scenarios of this type always require some caution, so until the end of the day, it is advisable to remain alert and, if it happens again:
- Stay calm
- Inside the house, stay away from windows and mirrors
- Never use elevators
- Follow the official sources for more information.
