Almost a year after the tragic derailment of the Glória Elevator in Lisbon , which killed 16 people and injured another 24 of various nationalities, Carris announced that it expects the new elevator to begin operating in 2029. The timeline, however, depends on the launch and development of an international public tender and may be subject to some changes.
The company plans to launch this international public tender for the design and construction of the future Glória funicular by the end of the first quarter of 2027. The forecast was announced on Monday, August 31, during the presentation of the future vision for this iconic Lisbon route, which took place in the auditorium of the Order of Engineers in the capital.
According to “Jornal Económico,” the new infrastructure is expected to be more modern and safer, while maintaining a configuration similar to the previous one. It will not, however, be a simple reconstruction, but rather a new facility, in which the cabins will no longer be made of wood, with a focus on “more durable materials.”
Regarding the Bica and Lavra elevators and the Santa Justa elevator, “Expresso” reports that it is not yet known when these facilities will resume operation, as their technical conditions are still being assessed.
