Since December 15 (2024), Fertagus trains have been connecting Setúbal to Lisbon with a 20-minute connection time in both directions, promising to improve mobility between these two regions of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
This change in timetables, which also takes place at weekends, is the result of an effort between the transport company, Infraestruturas de Portugal and the government to extend the company’s concession until March 2031.
Less waiting time… and relief on buses
This measure removes 10 minutes from the previous 30-minute intervals at peak times, and a lot of time from the one-hour intervals during the rest of the day, thus relieving the pressure on alternative means of transport, such as the Carris Metropolitana buses, which have been experiencing above-average demand.
Another benefit is the ease of internal travel within the Setúbal Peninsula, in towns served by this rail line, such as Palmela, Pinhal Novo and Coina.
According to the government’s calculations, the new Fertagus train timetables, which can be consulted on the website, will represent an increase in transport capacity , with 73% more seats available on weekdays, and 172% on weekends and public holidays.
According to André Martins, mayor of Setúbal,
The first train leaves Setúbal at 05h43 and the last at 00h43, and from Lisbon the first leaves at 05h53 and the last at 01h23. On weekends and public holidays, the first train leaves Setúbal at 06h03 and the last at 23h03. From Lisbon, the first train leaves Roma-Areeiro at 06h13 and the last at 00h03. Always every twenty minutes.
