In Lisbon, Christmas markets delight adults and attractions such as ice rinks and merry-go-rounds delight youngsters. However, for those looking for Christmas destinations outside the capital, there is an (almost) obligatory stop: the contemplation of the “Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus in the World”, in Águeda.
Located about 2h40 by car and approximately 245-260 km’s by car, depending on the route chosen and the traffic, the city of Águeda, in the district of Aveiro, has gained worldwide fame due to its instagrammable umbrellas. Now it also stands out as a Christmas destination.

The World’s Largest Santa Claus

From November 15 until January 11, 2026, the Águeda é Natal program promises to entertain the whole family. However, its biggest attraction is literally the giant Santa Claus, 21 meters high – the equivalent of a seven-storey building – illuminated by around 250,000 LED lights.
Installed in Largo 1.º de Maio, in the center of Águeda, the size of the World’s Largest Christmas is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, thus positioning this city in the Aveiro district as a Christmas destination to be reckoned with.
And the World’s Smallest Santa Claus

One of the strengths of the Águeda é Natal program is the duality between the colossal and the microscopic. On the one hand, the World’s Largest Santa Claus is perfect for photographic and video recordings. On the other hand, the World’s Smallest Santa Claus is not visible to the eye.
What does this mean? The nanostructure, designed by British artist Willard Wigan, can only be admired under a microscope at the Águeda Tourist Office.
Other attractions

In addition to its main attractions, the Águeda é Natal program also includes other highlights, such as the Christmas Market, concerts and street shows and the illuminated umbrellas.
How to get there from Lisbon?
To visit the World’s Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus, we recommend that you plan your trip in advance. This is because it’s best to arrive early to avoid traffic constraints or a lack of parking spaces.
In this sense, one of the most convenient and quickest ways to get to Águeda from Lisbon is by car, taking the A1 towards Porto and exiting at Aveiro-Sul/Águeda (exit 15), taking the EN235 to your destination.
