This Monday, November 4, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) issued a precautionary warning to the population due to bad weather.
According to the ANEPC, which cites the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), “a gradual change in weather conditions is expected, with the occurrence of precipitation, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms“.
Forecasts indicate that this scenario should extend to most of Portugal. Flooding in urban areas, landslides and water tables are some of the phenomena that could occur.
Civil Protection is also concerned about road surfaces becoming slippery, objects being swept away or the contamination of drinking water sources “by aggregates resulting from rural fires”.
Civil Protection’s advice
In order to minimize the impact of these possible occurrences, ANEPC recalls the importance of adopting preventive measures, particularly in traditionally more vulnerable areas.
In this sense, these are some of the tips shared by Civil Protection:
- Adopt defensive driving
- Ensure that rainwater drainage systems are clear and that rubble and other objects are removed.
- Ensure that loose structures are properly secured
- Do not cross flooded areas
- Follow the weather reports and the instructions from ANECP and the authorities
