About a 35-minute drive from Lisbon, there is a beach with golden sand, dark rock cliffs carved by the sea, and almost no buildings in sight. Praia da Adraga is part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which protects it from any tourist development—and explains why it still looks so wild, despite being so close to the capital.
A gorge carved by the sea

The beach lies at the end of an ancient river valley, which over millennia has carved a gorge into the dark volcanic rock cliffs of the Serra de Sintra. The result is a semi-sheltered cove, framed by imposing cliffs, where a natural stone arch stands out—one of the beach’s most photographed spots, which has even served as the backdrop for outdoor weddings. At low tide, it’s also possible to explore caves and passages carved into the rock.
Rough seas, calm sands
The sea at Adraga has a reputation for being challenging: the currents are strong, and it’s not uncommon to see a red flag flying, especially outside the more sheltered central part of the beach. Some surfers take advantage of the waves, although most prefer Praia Grande, further north, which is better known among those looking for waves to practice on. During the summer months, the beach has lifeguards on duty and maintains its Blue Flag designation, awarded for the quality of its water and infrastructure.
A single restaurant, right by the sea

Right next to the beach is a highly rated fish and seafood restaurant — Restaurante da Adraga —with a direct view of the ocean and a reputation that draws people from outside the region, especially at sunset. It is practically the only dining option right on the beach, which reinforces the feeling of being in a place off the beaten path.
Trails for those who want to continue exploring
For those who don’t mind a walk, there are coastal trails leading from Adraga in both directions: to the north, a shorter route leads to Praia Grande; to the south, a more challenging trail crosses the Fojo dos Morcegos area to the remote Praia da Ursa, with viewpoints along the way overlooking the rugged coastline.
