After passing through Chiado, Baixa and Avenida da Liberdade, today’s choice is for one of the areas of Lisbon that quickly takes us back to ancient times, around 20 years ago, when shopping centers were still a rarity in the capital: Christmas on Avenida de Roma and Avenida Guerra Junqueiro.
Christmas in Lisbon is truly incredible, and Avenida de Roma and, especially, Avenida Guerra Junqueiro, come straight into our favorites of the city’s arteries for shopping this Christmas season. Let’s start with the former!
Christmas on Avenida de Roma…
Avenida de Roma stretches from Praça de Londres to Avenida do Brasil. So there’s no shortage of places to complete your Christmas gift list, such as Livraria Barata, which now belongs to the French company Fnac.
Open since 1957, Barata is located at number 11A on this avenue and is defined as a tobacconist, stationery store and bookshop.
It is one of the literary spaces that has made a mark on the city and several generations have nurtured their passion for letters here.
Nearby is a place where you can buy one of the best chocolates in the city, Arcádia Casa do Chocolate, located at number 14D.
It was founded in 1933 and has 28 stores across the country, but at the Avenida de Roma store you’ll find all the brand’s specialties, from chocolates in the most diverse sizes and flavors to Bonjour liqueur dragees.
A delicious, aromatic coffee always goes well with good chocolate. So our next stop was Cafélia, located at 55C on this avenue.
Since 1953, Cafélia has been selling teas and coffees from all over the world. However, we suggest the Cafélia blend, which is the star of the house.
We end our trip along the Avenida de Roma with one last stop at Lãs Imperial, because we know that the best gifts are those you make with your own hands.
This store has been open since 1972, at number 59B, and is, of course, dedicated to selling woollens of all kinds and shapes. You can also offer a sewing or knitting workshop.
… and Avenida Guerra Junqueiro
This avenue, once very popular for Christmas shopping, connects Alameda Afonso Henriques to Jardim da Praça de Londres and, a little further on, to Avenida de Roma. Nowadays it’s much more modern, with bike lanes and wider sidewalks.
On the left, as you go up towards Jardim da Praça de Londres, there are two obligatory stops, one for adults and one for the little ones.
The Casquilho perfumery at number 3, with the best-known fragrances of the moment, and the Chicco store, which is right at the beginning of the street and, of course, sells mainly childcare products.
Here you’ll also find some of the largest practical fashion stores, such as Mango, United Colors of Benetton, Cortefiel, Springfield, Stefanel, Caroll, among others.
But our next stop was the VIVA store, which is a kind of warehouse where you can find the most original Christmas gifts, from furniture, decoration, textiles and, of course, a good bargain.
Next door you’ll also find Zara Home and across the street you’ll find Ricardo & Ricardo’s jewelry store, withbeautiful pieces and that promotion we’ve been looking for.
Before we get to Mexicana, a must for a coffee and some relaxation on the famous terrace, there’s still time to stop by the Bordallo Pinheiro store, with some of the most spectacular products by this famous ceramic artist.
Whichever object you choose in this store, the guarantee is that whoever receives it will be in possession of a true Portuguese masterpiece of added value.
