This Friday, October 2, workers in general public administration positions—operational assistants, technical assistants, and senior technicians—are called to a 24-hour strike. The strike was called by three CGTP-affiliated unions (FNSTFPS, STAL, and STML) which, according to the labor federation, want to see these job categories better valued and wage negotiations begin as early as 2026.
What may be affected in Lisbon
City Hall, local councils, and schools
In the capital, the strike notice issued by the Lisbon Municipal Workers’ Union (STML) covers , according to the union itself, employees of the City Council and parish councils, regardless of career path or type of contract. As a result, public services and urban sanitation may be disrupted. There are also schools that may close due to a shortage of non-teaching staff, as reported by *Diário de Notícias*.

Health
The National Union of Workers in Public Services and Public Entities (STTS) has filed a strike notice, valid nationwide, on behalf of the workers it represents. In the strike notice, the union commits to ensuring minimum services in operations that run 24/7, as well as for ongoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and hemodialysis treatments and blood donations. Scheduled appointments and tests may be affected, so it’s a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before leaving home.
Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa
Here, too, a strike notice has been issued by the FNSTFPS. According to the order issued by the Ministries of Health and Labor, published by the Directorate-General for Employment and Labor Relations (DGERT), the strike will affect residential facilities for people with disabilities, children, youth, and the elderly, as well as home care services and health facilities such as the Alcoitão Center for Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Sant’Ana Orthopedic Hospital. Meals, hygiene, and health care for residents are guaranteed through essential services.
Protest in Baixa
At 11 a.m., the unions will gather at Praça da Figueira and then march to the Ministry of Finance, according to the STML. Traffic in downtown Lisbon may therefore be affected at that time.
