The MotoGP™ World Championship organizers have put an end to speculation and delivered the news that Portuguese motorsports fans have been waiting for: Portugal will continue to be part of the MotoGP™ calendar at least through 2029, with the dates for 2027 already confirmed as October 1–3.
The confirmation appears on the competition’s official website, where the message was clear and direct:
This assurance extends the Algarve International Circuit (AIA) in Portimão’s place among the select group of world-class circuits. For the southern region of the country, the race’s continuation means not only sporting prestige but also the maintenance of a strong economic and tourism driver associated with the thousands of fans and teams who travel to the country.
What to Expect from the MotoGP™ Portuguese Grand Prix

With the long-term future now secured, attention has turned to this year’s race, which features a major change compared to previous years.
While the Algarve track has occasionally hosted the season opener, the scenario will change in 2026: the Portimão circuit will welcome the elite of motorcycle racing in the championship’s final stretch, from November 20 to 22.
As the penultimate round of the calendar, the Portuguese race takes on extra significance: it is very likely that the world title will be on the line precisely on the “roller coaster” curves of the Algarve, which promises to heighten the tension on the track and the excitement in the stands to the maximum.
A Look at Portugal’s History on Two Wheels
The Portuguese MotoGP™ Grand Prix has an intriguing history that goes far beyond the most recent races in the Algarve:
- 1987
- 2000 to 2011
- 2020 to the present
With the new contract through 2029, Portimão cements its place at the top of world motorcycle racing.
Fans can now mark November on their calendars to once again hear the engines revving at full throttle in southern Portugal.
