Eleven districts in mainland Portugal, including Lisbon, are under a yellow warning today due to forecasts of rain or showers, which may at times be heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms. According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), as reported by RTP, the warning has been in effect since 6 a.m. in four northern districts and will be extended throughout the day.
In Lisbon, the yellow advisory for precipitation and thunderstorms begins at 9 a.m. and remains in effect until 3 p.m. The same time frame applies to Leiria and Coimbra, which will be under the advisory at the same time as the capital.
The remaining affected districts
The warning went into effect at 6 a.m. in Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, and Aveiro, with a risk of rainfall accumulation between 10 and 20 mm per hour and wind gusts between 70 and 90 km/h. The warning remains in effect until noon in Porto and Aveiro, and until 3 p.m. in Viana do Castelo and Braga.
At 9 a.m., the warning was extended to include Vila Real and Viseu, in addition to Lisbon, Leiria, and Coimbra. Starting at noon, Bragança and Guarda will also be under a yellow warning, valid until 6 p.m.
What can we expect for the rest of the day?
According to the IPMA, the day will be marked by periods of rain or showers—at times heavy in the North and Center—strong winds along the western coast and in the highlands, and a slight drop in the high temperature.
