For the next six months, the Segunda Circular, which is just one of the most important car traffic routes in the Lisbon capital, will be subject to some constraints, especially during the night, from 10pm to 6am, from Monday to Saturday.
The choice of this time slot allows the Lisbon City Council to minimize the impact on traffic, on what is one of the roads where the most vehicles circulate at any time of day, especially at peak times, early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
Work has already begun on the north-south side of the Segunda Circular, on the east side (between the Galp pumps and Avenida de Berlim).
Saving electricity
The reason for these constraints is the replacement of the public lighting, a lengthy operation that will take around six months to change the old high-pressure sodium vapor luminaires for lamps with LED technology, which is more efficient and sustainable.
With this change, Lisbon City Council expects to save around 81,000 euros on its annual electricity bill, as well as contributing to a significant improvement in lighting and maintenance costs.
According to Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon,
Any investment that reinforces safety on the Segunda Circular is well worth it. In this particular case, there is also environmental concern, something we are strongly committed to.”
This project includes the installation of around 380 new columns and 720 LED lights, in an investment of around €729,500, in what is yet another step by the City Council towards sustainability and the modernization of its urban infrastructures.
