Various astronomical phenomena have been spotted in Portugal, especially in summer, with the magnificent star shower Perseidas, or the rare Blue Supermoon. However, they didn’t stop there and there are reports of a very recent event: the sighting of a meteor in Portugal.
According to the SIC Notícias website, the bolide –-named after a very bright meteor-, illuminated several points in Portugal, in the early hours of September 3, at around 2:38 a.m..
According to the same source, the meteor is said to have ‘exploded’ in the Beira Baixa region, in the border area with Spain. Although the moment was not spotted throughout Portugal, it was recorded by the observatories of Braga and Tomar.
In fact, this event even went viral after the Planetário – Casa da Ciência de Braga shared a video via its official social networks.
“Larger meteor”
In statements to the newspaper Público, quoted by the Radio Renascença website, João Paulo Vieira (from Braga’s House of Science) explained that this type of record is frequent, but on a smaller scale.
In practice, this means that when a meteor reaches us “with that beautiful glow and trail” it’s possibly because it’s larger than usual.
