This is the fourth consecutive year that Street Art Cities has “searched” for the best mural of the year, which this year will succeed Djoels, SFHIR and Leon Keer, the illustrious winners of the previous edition.
There are no less than 100 nominees competing in three categories: “Best of 2024”, “Expert’s Choice” and the most recent “Artist’s Choice”.
The Street Art Cities Best Of Awards are a celebration of the best in urban art, recognizing outstanding work by many street artists around the world. And five of these works can be visited in Portugal, four in Lisbon and one in the municipality of Guarda.
The selected murals
The awards celebrate the richness and vitality of street art, ranging from impressive murals that transform urban spaces to small interventions that question traditional narratives.
Nominations are made by dedicated art enthusiasts, local communities and the wide network of city ambassadors linked to the Street Art Cities platform, and winners are chosen through a combination of public votes and expert evaluation, ensuring a balance between community participation and artistic quality.
This year, four works were nominated in Lisbon:
Afonsoul’s mural, for “Cor de Chelas”
The concept for the “Inner Feeling” mural was inspired by the desire to highlight the feeling of freedom and equality for women on International Women’s Day.
Mural by Sepher Awk, for the Urban Art Gallery project
This mural marks a milestone in his artistic journey, being his first building-sized intervention and a dream come true since 2014. It also reflects the forgotten reality of Lisbon’s Bairro Vale, blending my personal growth with the local social context.
Ricardo Romero’s mural for the Zambujal special project in Amadora
The pattern that appears on the wall, as well as representing the costumes worn by the percussionists, is intended to be a symbol of the overlapping cultures that work together here, that rise without ever overshadowing, that work simultaneously to make the Zambujal neighborhood an inclusive space of cooperation and development for a fairer and more equal society.
Collaborative mural by Vhils and Bordallo, for “Cor de Chelas”
The collaboration between artists Vhils and Bordallo was nominated for the “Expert’s Choice” award, having been created for the “Cor de Chelas” project.
The winner
Outside Lisbon, Nuno Miles’ anamorphic “Touro Raiano” is already a reference in the city of Guarda, competing for the “Best of 2024”, and in the end winning the top prize.
