Although she adopted July 1 to celebrate her birthday, it was on July 23, 1920 that our fado singer was born, and this is just the first piece of trivia about our diva that we’ve told you here. But there are many more!
Ever since she became nationally and globally famous, Amália Rodrigues’ birthday has always been a cause for great celebration, and she chose the first day of July because that way she would receive more presents, since at the beginning of each month there is always more money in the wallets , she always said in a humorous tone.

This date is usually marked with various tributes, such as the exhibition “Bem-Vinda Sejas, Amália” which you can see in the Salão Nobre of the Coliseu Micaelense in Ponta Delgada until July 29th.
Special concerts in Amália’s Garden and visits to her house, which has been transformed into a House-Museum, are other options, and these experiences can be enjoyed almost every day in Lisbon.
Curiosities about Amália Rodrigues
In addition to all the experiences you can have in the city that pay homage to our fado singer, you can also take advantage of our guide to the best plans with our diva, which even includes a visit to the immersive exhibition “Ah Amália!”.
But if you really think you know everything about Amália Rodrigues, check out the curiosities we’ve discovered over the last few years:
- Did you know that you can visit the House of Amália Rodrigues exactly as she left it? We’ve been there, and it was incredible!
- Did you know that Amália was the greatest fado singer of the last century? She became an icon of Portuguese music and a true ambassador of national culture to the world.
- Did you know that the Casa-Museu houses a 17th century Portuguese guitar? Although the Portuguese guitar only took on its current form at the end of the 18th century, there is a reference in the House of Amália Rodrigues to a guitar with 17th century elements, specifically with garnets, turquoises and new mines from the 17th century, which is part of the collection as a decorative object and of artistic value, although it is not a typical Portuguese guitar associated with fado.
- Did you know that Amália and the Beatles were the only artists to receive the M.I.D.E.M award three times? This award is a recognition given within the framework of MIDEM (Marché International du Disque et de l’Édition Musicale), considered the world’s largest gathering of the music industries, held annually in Cannes, France, since 1967. In Portugal, this award was given to distinguish record sales in certain markets, as Amália achieved in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

- Did you know that one of the countries that cherished Amália the most was Japan? The special relationship between the “Queen of Fado” and the Japanese public began in 1970, when the fado singer represented Portugal at the Osaka World Expo, making an indelible mark on the Japanese cultural imagination.
- Did you know that in the Casa-Museu Amália Rodrigues there are 219 pairs of the artist’s shoes, and that her stage shoes are between 15 and 17 cm long? Considered one of the artist’s few collections, it includes stage shoes (specially designed for Amália, often with a platform of 15 to 17 centimeters to disguise her height of 1.58m) and shoes for formal events from brands such as Sergio Rossi, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Salvatore Ferragamo. This collection is also part of the permanent collection of his House-Museum.

Amália Rodrigues is an inescapable figure in our country, which is why we are always looking for new experiences and knowledge in which our fado singer is honored.
