It looks like the ‘summer of St. Martin’ is over, with a substantial worsening of the weather forecast for mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Periods of persistent precipitation, the possibility of thunderstorms , strong winds and high sea levels are some of the forecasts
According to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this scenario is due to the arrival of depression Cláudia, which is expected to start in Minho (this Tuesday, November 11) and then gradually spread to the rest of the country.

Civil Protection’s preventive measures
Due to forecasts of worsening weather, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) has issued some preventive measures to mitigate possible risks.
In this context, the ANEPC’s official document calls for the adoption of appropriate behavior, which is especially important “in historically more vulnerable areas”.
According to Civil Protection, there are nine main preventive measures to consider, namely:
- Clear rainwater drainage systems and remove aggregates and other objects
- Ensuring that loose structures are properly secured
- Avoid moving and staying near wooded areas
- Avoid driving near coastlines and riverside areas
- Drive defensively
- Do not engage in any activities related to the sea, such as sport fishing, walks along the seafront, or parking vehicles near the seafront.
- Do not cross flooded areas
- Remove property and animals from potentially flooded areas
- Follow the IPMA’s information and Civil Protection’s instructions closely .
