With its arms open over the River Tagus, Cristo Rei is one of the main tourist landmarks in the municipality of Almada. However, on the evening of April 11, it will be embracing a different cause: World Parkinson’s Day.
As part of a global initiative called “Spark the Night”, the monument will be lit up in blue with the aim of raising awareness of the effects of this neurodegenerative disease.
This event aims to illuminate emblematic sites in various cities around the world with the color blue to raise awareness of the effects of Parkinson’s Disease, which affects millions of people worldwide,” reads a statement sent to Lisboa Secreta.

The “Spark the Night” initiative is led by the PD Avengers group and has the support of AbbVie, seeking to draw attention to Parkinson’s hidden struggles.
After all, it is a neurodegenerative disease that causes debilitating symptoms, motor difficulties and more, impacting patients as well as their caregivers. In this sense, there is an urgent need to increase public awareness of the disease.
