If you’re like us, fervent fans of Padel, a sport that is growing more and more in our country, then you know the stress of finding a place in Lisbon to hit a few balls, don’t you?
And what’s even worse is finding a good spot that has a bar, so you can enjoy those cold beers after a game with your friends.
Your search is over! The following list has all that and more: some of the best places to play padel in Lisbon.
But if this is the first time you’ve heard of this “new” sport that everyone is talking about and wants to try, then here’s a quick summary of what Padel is all about.
What is padel?
Padel is, in fact, a very recent sport, which began to grow rapidly in the 1990s, and it’s only in recent years that there have been more and more players and infrastructures in our country.
Padel was created in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1969 by Enrique Corcuera, who at the time called it “Paddle Corcuera”.
In Portugal, Padel appeared around 2001, coming from Spain. It was only in 2008, with the organization of the European Championships at the Estoril Tennis Club, that it began to gain fans and players, with more and more tennis clubs opening Padel courts all over the country.
Today, this sport, which can be practiced by people of all ages, already has its own federation, the Federação Portuguesa de Padel (FPP).
Where is it played?
Padel is currently a sport played in pairs with solid rackets (without nets) and specific balls, and it is played on its own court between panels, which suggests that it is based on tennis and squash.
The court is rectangular (10 meters wide by 20 meters long, with a net dividing the court), completely enclosed and surrounded by panels, which can be made of glass, another smooth material or even metal mesh.
The floor can be made of synthetic grass, carpet or even concrete, and Padel can be played outdoors, indoors or even semi-outdoors.
How is it played?
As we’ve already mentioned, each Padel match is played in pairs, and the points system is similar to tennis: 1st point – 15, 2nd point – 30, 3rd point – 40 and 4th point – game.
The big difference with tennis is that thecourt is inside the panels, where the ball can bounce and then be played to the opponents on the other side of the court, just like in squash.
