After Halloween, Christmas lights and music begin to fill the imaginations of the most ardent fans of the festive season. So, in the blink of an eye, the first chords of “Last Christmas” will be echoing everywhere. Considered a true Christmas classic, this song, written and produced by George Michael, took 39 years to reach number one on the UK Christmas charts—a record. Did you know that?
Released in 1984 with the stated goal of topping the British Christmas charts, Wham!’s famous song was surpassed that year by “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid. However, that didn’t stop the chorus from continuing to win over listeners year after year until the magic happened: on December 22, 2023, the song reached number one on the Christmas charts, with 13.3 million streams in a single week. Now, you’ll have the chance to (re)discover this and other Christmas classics at a special candlelit concert on December 17 at the Aula Magna in Lisbon.

Aula Magna
From Wham! to Tchaikovsky by candlelight and to the rhythm of Christmas

The musical program planned for Candlelight: Christmas Classics includes Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” but this is far from the only popular song to be heard in the Aula Magna.
For 60 minutes, the Lisbon Quartet will perform a collection of well-known Christmas songs, ranging from timeless carols to classical compositions, such as the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker.”
Under the soft, intimate glow of a thousand LED candles, the musical event will also feature true holiday anthems, such as “Jingle Bells” and “Feliz Navidad,” among others.
The candlelight concerts in Lisbon take place in venues as impressive as their diverse musical repertoires, such as “Candlelight: Christmas Classics,” which is held in the Aula Magna—located in the Rector’s Office building of the University of Lisbon, classified as a National Monument since 2023, along with the Law and Arts faculties and the University Alameda.
