After a countdown eagerly followed by many enthusiasts of astronomical phenomena, this Wednesday, August 12, one of the most anticipated moments in recent times will finally arrive : the solar eclipse.
The phenomenon will be visible throughout the country, although with varying degrees of totality. For example, in Lisbon, the expected percentage of totality is approximately 95%. However, in a very narrow strip of the Montesinho Natural Park, in the district of Bragança, the eclipse will be total.
If you haven’t traveled to northeastern Trás-os-Montes, or weren’t able to purchase certified solar filters (in compliance with ISO 12312-2 and CE marking) in time, don’t despair. That’s because you can not only watch the solar eclipse but also follow every moment from the comfort of your own home.
Online broadcasts
Without leaving your couch, you can follow the solar eclipse in real time through various social media platforms or other organizations. For example, NASA will broadcast the eclipse live on its free streaming platform and on other social media platforms, such as Facebook, X, and YouTube.
In Portugal, a live stream has been announced on Ciência Viva’s YouTube channel, broadcast from the Montesinho Natural Park. The broadcast begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m., with the eclipse reaching its peak around 7:30 p.m.
