Two years after they were removed due to preparations for World Youth Day and the visit of Pope Francis, the famous laurel wreaths on the monumental columns of Parque Eduardo VII in Lisbon are still ‘out of place’.
At the time of their removal in 2023, citizens were informed that the laurel wreaths were in the custody of Lisbon City Council (CML) to be restored. However, since then, Parque Eduardo VII has still been without the wreaths that adorned its columns located at the top of the green space.
Faced with this prolonged silence, a group of Lisbon citizens took the initiative to launch a public petition demanding that the famous crowns be restored as soon as possible.
In the petition, the signatories do not spare any criticism, stressing that the delay is unacceptable:
(…) express their deep concern and displeasure at the absence, for two years now, of the laurel wreaths that adorned the monumental columns of Parque Eduardo VII, in Lisbon. (…) The preservation of its architectural and sculptural elements is a municipal obligation,” reads the document.

Replacement coming soon?
In the meantime, there seems to be news, or at least promises that point to a possible resolution of the problem.
According to a report in the Público newspaper, CML has promised to replace the crowns on the columns in Parque Eduardo VII.
It now remains to be seen whether CML’s promise, reported by Público, will translate into swift action.
