On Rua da Pimenta, between the Vasco da Gama Tower and the MEO Arena, there’s a row of restaurants that leave you inebriated every time you pass by. On this eastern thoroughfare of the capital you’ll find all kinds of cuisine, from fast food to gourmet dishes, but as we were hungry for Mexican, we went to Pepe Taco, a friendly and well-decorated place that serves the cheapest tacos in town, among other delights that we’ll introduce you to below.
Parque das Nações is a real city within a city, and Pepe Taco is right in the gastronomic center of this part of eastern Lisbon, proving to be a restaurant that combines the relaxation of a taqueria with some of the best Mexican cuisine.
Inside and out
The space is very pleasant… and big! Outside you’ll find a huge terrace, perfect for ball days (with giant screens) or hot summer afternoons.
Inside, there are a few rooms divided into two floors. On the first floor, there are two counters, one for you to place your order and the other for you to collect it, and a more private room (the Sanctuary), which we would say is almost private, perfect for welcoming all your friends or family, perhaps for a small, more secluded celebration.
On the upper floor, there are two rooms, separated by glass, which open up completely to give way to a gigantic space, full of tables where you can socialize over Mexican snacks, cocktails and beer, lots of beer.
Secret Lisbon Experience
Our experiences at the Pepe Taco restaurant are always very pleasant, so much so that it has become one of our favorite spots in this part of the city.
Every time we go there it’s a real gastronomic journey, full of intense flavors and moments of sharing, which is the best thing we take away from this life.
The Lágrimas Tía María (€5.90) are the first treat to come to the table. The little ones love the little crispy chicken patties that conquer the whole table with their crunchy texture (the person writing these lines is “crazy” about this snack).
At Pepe Taco it’s convenient to order everything at once, and then go on ordering as you feel like eating more.
That’s why we’ve added to the panadinhos an incredible variety of Tacos (they have 12 in total), which must be the cheapest in Lisbon: starting with the Classics (€1.50 each), through the Specials (€2) to the Premiums (€2.50). They surprise with their creativity and the freshness of the ingredients.
We also ordered one of the famous Burritos, the Pulled Porq BBQ (€6.90), which comes stuffed with succulent shredded beef and a sweet touch of barbecue sauce; the typical Mexican Quesadilla (€5), which brought the authentic taste of Mexico to our table; and, to share, we couldn’t resist the traditional Nachos Supreme (€5.90), in a generous portion of melted cheese, fresh guacamole and a spicy touch that served perfectly for four people.
As for drinks, the variety is also impressive: we opted for a Margarita (€5.50), which we think is the cheapest in town, but surprisingly delicious; a Mojito Rico (€6.90), a refreshing combination of lime pulp, brown sugar, Sprite Zero and mint; and, to finish in style , as a “dessert”, we ordered the famous Pepebotes, a bucket with five Super Bock minis for just €5, ideal for prolonging the conversation in good company.
There are special offers every week
If you’re already familiar with this place in Parque das Nações, you’ve no doubt already noticed the various promotions they run during the week. For example, you might find one of these campaigns:
- Momentaco: every Friday, tacos for €2
- Ponte Perro: every Sunday, hot dogs for €2
- 2 Margaritas: with the purchase of an “A La Tabla” and a Margarita, they offer the second one
- Sharing is Caring: when you buy an “A La Tabla” and a cocktail, they offer the second one
- 2×1 on Burritos: every Thursday
Note that these may already be out of date, as Pepe taco is always innovating its offers. So it’s best to take a look at their Instagram page.
For all these reasons and more, we highly recommend Pepe Taco for its excellent value for money and the diversity of its menu.
Our experience was rewarding and memorable, marked by delicious dishes and a relaxed atmosphere that made us feel at home. I’m sure we’ll be back many times. See you there?
