The occurrence of the Northern Lights makes many Portuguese dream of destinations such as Iceland or Finland. However, the luckiest ones had the opportunity to contemplate this rare phenomenon in the skies of Portugal, illuminating various parts of the country in shades of pink, especially in the north.
Captured on Monday night (January 19), the various images were shared on digital platforms such as Meteo Trás os Montes – Portugal. Places such as Vila Pouca de Aguiar (Vila Real), Bragança, São Pedro do Sul (Viseu), and Grândola (Setúbal) captured privileged images of the northern lights.
What is the origin of the Northern Lights?

According to Euronews, the rare event was also reported in other European countries, such as Germany and the United Kingdom, due to a solar storm and a subsequent disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field.
A severe S4-levelsolar radiation storm is now underway —this is the largest solar radiation storm in more than 20 years. The last time S4 levels were observed was in October 2003. The potential effects are mainly limited to space launches, aviation, and satellite operations,” the US Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) posted on social media.
According to the SWPC, quoted by Euronews, these types of storms can affect objects in space and communication systems. However, the current solar storm is expected to weaken on Tuesday (January 20).
