There are places that seem to have stepped out of a major Hollywood-worthy film production, or from the fantastical imagination of George R. Martin ( creator of the “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” sagas). And the Moorish Castle, about a 30-minute drive from Lisbon, is one of those places dominated by a breathtaking landscape.
Perched atop the Serra de Sintra, the ancient medieval fortress—originally built by the Moors—seems to defy the laws of gravity and time. Designated a National Monument since 1910, it displays a winding silhouette, nestled between giant boulders and a mystical fog that seems to foreshadow the arrival of King Sebastian.
A brief historical overview

It is said that the Moors built a fortress there in the 8th century due to its strategic geographical position for defending the local territory and maritime access routes. However, with the Christian Reconquista led by Afonso Henriques in 1147, the Moorish Castle passed into Portuguese hands.
At the time, Portugal’s first king entrusted the construction and administration of the town of Sintra to Gualdim Pais, the legendary Grand Master of the Order of the Temple, granting it a charter in 1154. The occupation of the castle— one of the most impressive in the country—lasted until the 15th century, when it began to be gradually abandoned.
The charms of the landscape
There are many reasons to visit the Moorish Castle, but if you’re expecting to find a fully intact structure like the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira (in the district of Aveiro), then you’re better off staying home. On the other hand, if you feel the “call” of the ruins of the past, take the opportunity to explore the fortress.
After all, walking among its battlements is synonymous not only with a journey through time but also with atruly sensory experience. From its heights, you can contemplate the romantic splendor of the town of Sintra and the Atlantic in the background, which on clear days offers a breathtaking view.
‘Hidden’ treasures in the rocks

Among its stones, the Moorish Castle “guards” some “hidden” treasures, such as the Medieval Necropolis —next to the Chapel of São Pedro, with Christian and Muslim graves; or the Giant Cistern, an excellent example of medieval engineering.
