Travel is increasingly an experience that extends beyond excellent cuisine or imposing monuments . In an era where social media plays such a significant role in our daily lives, a destination’s visual appeal is (very) important.
From the seaside vibes of Cinque Terre (Italy) to the vibrant tiles of the Selarón Staircase in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), there are destinations that are world-famous precisely for the color palette they display. But… what if we told you that the most colorful of them all is right here?
With this in mind, experts from the Irish travel insurance company JustCover conducted a study covering 78 destinations to determine which is the most vibrant in the world. The best part? You don’t even need to pack your bags to visit it, since our very own Lisbon comes in first place.
Lisbon tops the list

According to the JustCover study, over 2.6 million colors were identified in visual records of Lisbon. In this context, the Portuguese capital achieved a perfect score of 100, ranking ahead of destinations traditionally known for their vibrant hues and high Instagramability, such as Havana (Cuba) and Venice (Italy), among many others.
“The Most Colorful City”
The pastel hues and tiles that line Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods were highlighted, as were the city’s iconic yellow trams and terracotta rooftops. For all this and much more, Lisbon was voted the most colorful city in the world.
The top 10
In total, the JustCover study presented a final ranking of 30 cities, but we’ve highlighted the top 10 here, noting that Lisbon isn’t the only Portuguese representative on the list:
- Lisbon, Portugal (100)
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (94.5)
- Porto, Portugal (91.6)
- Cartagena, Colombia (91.4)
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (89.1)
- Guanajuato, Mexico (71.2)
- Havana, Cuba (70.6)
- Hanoi, Vietnam (69.0)
- New Orleans, USA (67.1)
- Medellín, Colombia (65.7).
How did they arrive at these results?

To carry out this study, the experts at JustCover compiled a list of the most iconic and colorful cities from around the world, selecting several representative photographs of each, including aerial and street-level views.
The goal was to collect images that captured the typical landscape of the location, without intense filters. After that, a color analysis tool was applied to measure the number of shades present in each image.
The results were combined to calculate an overall vibrancy score using pixel-level data… and thus they concluded that Lisbon is the most colorful city in the world!
