Sintra is considered one of the most romantic towns in the country. Surrounded by palaces that seem to have stepped out of a fairy tale and a mountain range that is as beautiful as it is mysterious, on March 21 it will serve as the setting for a special initiative: “A Night for the Future of the Sintra Mountains.”
To mark World Tree Day (and also International Forest Day), the National Palace of Sintra will open its doors for evening tours between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. (with last admission at 10 p.m.), in a unique and special setting, in support of a noble cause.
According to the Parques de Sintrawebsite, “admission will be granted through the purchase of a tree, priced at two euros.” All of this is to help with the reforestation of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which was severely affected by the severe weather that ravaged the country this winter.
The future of the Serra

According to the same source, the trees, purchased from local growers and displayed in the Palace Courtyard, will then be placed on the staircase of the National Palace of Sintra. At a later stage, they will be replanted in the Sintra Mountains.
A special initiative
In addition to the noble cause associated with this initiative, it is also special due to the setting visitors will encounter, with an atmosphere illuminated by candles and various musical touches.
A very old palace
Designated a National Monument since 1910, the National Palace of Sintra is one of the most beautiful in the town and boasts a centuries-old history, having served as the residence of the Portuguese royal family from the 12th century until the end of the monarchy.
