Like almost a year ago here we reported, the first stage of La Vuelta, the renowned Tour of Spain by Bike, will once again start in our country with a 12-kilometer time trial between Lisbon and Oeiras.
The event, which starts on August 17, will depart from to the Jerónimos Monastery, in Lisbon, and will end at Tower, in Oeiras.
For the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas,
It’s a joy to have an event of this scale in Lisbon, and the impact it will have on the city will attract visitors, support our tourism, our hotels and our restaurants. The world’s major events want to be in Lisbon and that’s extraordinary.”
The world’s best cyclists in Lisbon
La Vuelta is one of the queen races on the world cycling calendar, and it’s back in our country after starting in the capital in 1997 as a way of promoting Expo 98.
After this first stage, some of the world’s best cyclists , including Portugal’s João Almeida and Rui Costa, will head to the Center of Portugal, passing through Ourém, Lousã and Castelo Branco:
- august 17th: stage 1, Lisbon – Oeiras (Portugal), 12 km (time trial);
- august 18th: 2nd stage, Cascais – Ourém (Portugal), 191 km;
- august 19th: 3rd stage, Lousa-Castelo Branco (Portugal), 182 km.
Traffic constraints
As with any event of this scale, there’s always the downside, especially when it comes to people’s day-to-day lives, which on August 17th will be affected by some traffic constraints.
So, if you want to enjoy the famous and beautiful beaches of the Cascais Line, the best suggestion we can give you is to use public transportation, because the journey there is incredible.
The main cuts, and the alternatives:
- To begin with, the parking lots in the Tower, including areas near the restaurant “A Carruagem” and the Feitoria do Colégio Militar, will be closed from 10 p.m. on August 15 until 1 a.m. on August 18;
- Closure of the park in front of Forte de São Julião da Barra and Praia da Torre, from 6am on August 16th to 1am on August 18th;
- There will also be a partial closure of Avenida Marginal between Carcavelos and Alto da Barra, in both directions, from 8am on August 16 until 1am on August 18;
- Limited access and circulation to the Oeiras Marina, subject to accreditation and management by Oeiras Viva (concessionaires, boats, suppliers)..;
- Traffic on Alameda do Alto da Barra will be restricted to residents from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on August 17;
- Traffic will also be restricted to residents in the affected areas.
The Tour of Spain by Bike promises to entertain all lovers of the sport and beyond. We believe that all the passers-by and tourists will enjoy seeing all the great cyclists of the moment, in a world event that promises to be a success.
