The heat is already in full force in the capital, and the urge to take a dip is starting to take over. If you’re looking for destinations outside Lisbon for a weekend getaway, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, we have the perfect plan. There are several riverside gems that make every kilometer on the road worthwhile, and Cinco Reis River Beach is one of them.
Located about 180 kilometers from the capital and just seven kilometers from the city of Beja (in the Alentejo), the Cinco Reis River Beach recently reopened with a fresh new look and is ready to welcome another swimming season at the reservoir of the same name.
What will you find there?

According to information from the Beja City Council shared on Instagram, the site, located within a riverside park, “underwent extensive maintenance and renovation work.”
As such, among the projects carried out by the local government, the following stand out:
- The replenishment of sand
- Complete renovation of the thatched huts
- Renovation of the wooden structures in the main facilities, including walkways, a snack bar, restrooms, and bird-watching stations.
In addition, the surrounding beach and park areas have also undergone “vegetation clearing, replacement of signage, and improvements to access routes.”
Free transportation from Beja
If you decide to stay overnight in Beja, you can take advantage of the city’s free shuttle to the Cinco Reis River Beach, available from July 11 to September 13, once a day.
According to the available information, the group will depart from the Beja Outdoor Pool at 2:30 p.m., passing through Beringel, and the return from the river beach is scheduled for 7:15 p.m., also passing through Beringel.
Other points of interest

Since the drive from Lisbon to this riverside gem takes about 2 hours, take the opportunity to include this destination in a weekend getaway and explore the Beja region further. In this context, we recommend a visit to the local heritage sites.
For example, Beja Castle, the Beja Regional Museum, and the city’s historic center are (almost) must-see attractions for anyone who enjoys historical and cultural tourism. Another option could be to set out to explore the Alqueva region and visit incredible villages like Monsaraz.
