There are many chocolate stores in Lisbon, where this delicacy is sold in its most varied forms: in bars, bonbons, cakes, cookies and brownies, ice cream, drinks, among many other delicacies made with this precious ingredient.
For this reason, and because at Christmas, on birthdays and on Valentine’s Day this is one of the gifts we most like to receive, we asked our readers to tell us about the places where they buy their favorite chocolates in the city.
We received a lot of responses, and these were the most mentioned stores, where they most often go to sweeten their mouths with a good piece of chocolate.
1 – Arcádia
One of the best-known chocolate stores in Portugal. Founded in 1933 in Porto, it has opened several stores across the country: in Lisbon it has been located at Rua da Misericórdia 72 since September 2019.
But as modern times dictate, you can also place your order in their online store, and they also deliver to your home via the Uber and Glovo platforms.
Arcádia has always accustomed us to handmade Belgian chocolate, with recipes that make our mouths water with every bite. Today, because it’s World Chocolate Day, they have a 20% promotion on all their chocolates and almonds.
Our suggestion:
Try the Premium Traditional Assortment, which brings together unique creations based on milk and dark chocolate, simply combined with nuts and delicious fillings.
2 – Leonidas
Leonidas is the name of one of the world’s greatest master chocolate confectioners, who opened his first store in Belgium in 1913.
We were only lucky enough to have him around for over a century, when the brand began to expand to several countries and is now one of the biggest references in the Belgian chocolate sector.
In Lisbon, you can visit their chocolate stores in Alvalade, Campo Pequeno, Campo de Ourique, Rato, Praça de Espanha and Avenida da Liberdade.
Among the more than 80 varieties of chocolate, we highlight the pralines, for which they are world famous, the chocolate truffles and the dark chocolate ganache bonbons.
Our suggestion:
Try the Leonidas Jewel Box , a box filled with 30 bonbons where you can taste the best pralines ever.
3 – Chocolataria Equador
In Lisbon since 2013, the handmade chocolate brand born in Porto offers a series of chocolatey flavors and aromas that you really have to taste – and feel – to know it’s real.
Equador works with cocoa from São Tomé and Príncipe, from Roça de Santo António, one of the most aromatic, delicious and unique in the world.
One of the biggest highlights of this chocolate store is its decoration and, without a doubt, the packaging they use to wrap their chocolates.
It’s worth going in just to smell the various aromas, but you certainly won’t leave without a purchase.
Our suggestion:
The chocolate lollipops, in various flavors and with 30 grams of chocolate each, the recommended daily dose… for those who can resist, of course.
4 – Bettina and Nicolo Coralo
The store in Príncipe Real is staffed by Bettina, who welcomes all chocolate lovers to Lisbon.
Their handmade chocolate comes from Bolivia, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic and contains between 70 and 100% cocoa, without any additions, served in the purest possible state.
In this store you can find their chocolates in various formats: brownies, bars, bonbons, salamis and even in a glass, to warm you up on the grayest and coolest days.
Our suggestion:
Try the Chocolate Coffee Follies, beans from three different old and rare varieties of Arabica, grown in the same soil, side by side on the same plantation, roasted in exactly the same way and covered in the same chocolate. Hummm… they’re delicious!
5 – Funky Chunky
After arriving in Lisbon four years ago, Sofia started “dating” the idea of opening a cookie business in the city.
Because she felt that pastry in Portugal was still quite traditional in most of the places she visited, she thought it would be a good opportunity to explore the concept of a single product, and American cookies emerged as her first project.
It was when he left his company, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that he focused more on this project, which became part of his daily life 100%.
In a short time, it went from a home kitchen to a more professional one, and today it already has three physical stores.
She now sells more than 200 cookies a day – we’ve tried them and loved them – and receives positive feedback from her customers every day, as a result of a product that is freshly made or frozen to finish at home.
Our suggestion:
As the theme is chocolate, you have to try the chocolate cookies. But don’t forget to order the others because they’re just as fantastic.
