Visiting the Bugio Lighthouse is such an unprecedented experience that it will only happen on one day in August, on the 16th, which happens to be a Saturday.
If you’re also passionate about this little paradise full of history in the middle of the River Tagus, the “Vai Bugiar” tour offers a boat trip followed by a guided tour that will allow you to explore one of the country’s most emblematic fortifications from the inside.
The tour lasts 2h30 and includes entry to the Bugio Lighthouse, as well as access to the stories and curiosities that have always made this place a monument of interest in Lisbon, dating back to 1590.
You can find some of these stories in our article, but if you have the opportunity to take part in this trip, don’t even open it.

Some curiosities about the Bugio Lighthouse
Without wishing to reveal any important secrets, there are a few curiosities that you may already know because they are so commonplace:
- The Bugio Lighthouse operates without a permanent lighthouse keeper and is operated remotely;
- It has never had regular open access to the public, making this visit a rare opportunity;
- It has served, in addition to being a lighthouse, as a military post, a prison and even a military school;
- Inside is a chapel covered in historic tiles.

These and many other stories are what you’ll see and hear on this exclusive tour on August 16.
Registration costs €20 and should be done by emailing geral@aquastart.pt or calling 21 456 73 24.
