The Benfica Market, one of Lisbon’s largest and most traditional markets, will close its doors for most of August. The market itself announced the news on social media this Thursday, July 9: renovation work will take place between August 2 and 31, during which time the market will be closed to visitors.
Reason for the closure

According to the market, the closure is intended to modernize and enhance the space, so that it can continue to offer the best shopping experience in the heart of Benfica, maintaining its status as a landmark in Lisbon and an increasingly comfortable space for everyone. On August 1, before closing its doors, the market will still operate during its regular hours, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A renovation announced months ago
This closure comes after Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas announced a 3.1 million euro investment in the renovation of the Benfica Market. This renovation includes modernization work on flooring, finishes, cold storage rooms, and ventilation systems. At the time, city officials assured the public that the project would not require the market to close, and that it would proceed in phases without disrupting the market’s normal operations. Months later, the market itself has confirmed that, this time, it will indeed close its doors for nearly an entire month.
Half a century of history in Benfica
The Benfica Market opened its doors on October 19, 1971, and was the last municipal market to be inaugurated before the April 25, 1974, Revolution. This makes 2026 the year it celebrates its 55th anniversary. With an area of 2,800 square meters and more than 200 sales stalls, the market features a section dedicated to food and a non-food section offering clothing, footwear, plants, home decor, jewelry, and handbags.
