More and more new commercial establishments are opening up, whether in shopping malls, outlets or other areas of the city. However, it is important to continue preserving Lisbon’s “Shops with a History” and now there are three businesses that have achieved precisely this distinction.
According to information on the official Lisbon City Council website, it was approved “unanimously on February 5 to distinguish the Sá da Costa and Buchholz bookstores and the glazier A Vencedora as ‘Shops with History’ “. But before we get to know each of them better, it’s important to remember: what does this program consist of?
What are “Shops with History”?
Since 2017, this municipal program has aimed to preserve stores and their heritage, as well as to boost and reactivate commercial activity in the city of Lisbon.
If you want to ‘unveil’ some of the main commercial establishments with this ‘seal’, then you can take a look at this guide from Lisboa Secreta.
The new stores honored
Over eight decades old, Livraria Buchholz is the youngest of the three newly distinguished stores. Located in Rua Duque de Palmela, it is a classic for all lovers of literature and reading. Names such as Sá Carneiro, Francisco Pinto Balsemão, Al Berto and Vergílio Ferreira, among others, have passed through its gatherings.
Sá da Costa (located in Rua Garret) has been around for over a century and, as well as selling rare books, holds various events in the gallery above the store. For example, exhibitions, workshops and book launches.
Last but not least, the glass store A Vencedora is the oldest of these three new “Shops with History”, having been established in 1875. Located in Rua de São Lázaro, this business is dedicated to “the sale and manufacture of custom-made frames”.
